Travel Well, Prepare Early
East Africa is an extraordinary travel region, but it requires thoughtful preparation. Health requirements and recommendations vary by country, route, season, personal medical history and where you are travelling from.
This page provides general guidance only. It is not medical advice. Travellers should speak with a qualified travel health professional before departure, ideally 6 to 8 weeks before travel.
Travel Health Consultation
A travel clinic or medical professional can advise on routine vaccines, destination-specific vaccines, malaria prevention, yellow fever certificate requirements, prescription medication, altitude concerns, food and water precautions and any personal health risks.
Tell your clinician your full route, including transit countries, safari areas, gorilla trekking, rural stays, beach extensions and any planned adventure activities.
Yellow Fever
Yellow fever vaccination rules vary by country and travel route. Some countries require proof of vaccination if you are arriving from, or transiting through, a country with yellow fever transmission risk. Uganda’s entry process may require proof of yellow fever vaccination for travellers.
Because multi-country East Africa itineraries can involve several entry points, travellers should verify yellow fever requirements early and carry the yellow vaccination certificate where applicable.
Malaria Prevention
Malaria is present in many parts of East Africa. Risk varies by country, altitude, season and exact travel area. Travellers should ask a travel health professional whether antimalarial medication is recommended for their itinerary.
